Client Story: Katherine and Jeanne

Life as a single parent is difficult to manage. Between children’s appointments, school schedules, extracurricular activities, a single parent’s schedule can quickly be commandeered by their children.

That was the case for Katherine. She, as a single parent, was juggling the responsibilities of four children. Although she was busy, she supported her children and ensured they were cared for.

A single mother sits on a bench with her two children, overlooking a forest.

Although life felt hectic, things were relatively stable, until Katherine had to relocate herself and her children for safety. As the victim of a crime, Katherine had to not only prioritize the wellbeing of her kids, but she had to start navigating court dates, medical appointments, and other problems that arose during this traumatic time. These expenses added up quickly, leading to Katherine falling behind on rent at her new place.

Katherine’s mother, Jeanne, moved in to help support the kids, and to help Katherine restabilize during her time in court and doctor’s appointments. However, no matter what they did, the pair were still behind on rent, even with regular payments.

This is when they contacted Jesse Tree. Jeanne called the Tenant Resource Center to apply for Emergency Rental Assistance and was then connected to their case manager. Understanding the compounding effect of the circumstances the pair were facing, and the importance of keeping the children stably housed, their case manager worked quickly to get the pair resources. In addition to emergency rental assistance, their case manager was able to provide them with household supplies like soap, detergent, and paper towels to ensure their needs were met.

The family is still in their apartment, and Katherine is able to focus on her new job and on healing.
